Study Skills for Success and How STEM Education can help


When it comes to gaining success in school, there is no single pathway to follow. Each student is unique with their own set of learning skills, and interests. In this blog post, we are going to focus on 5 critical skills each student needs, and how STEM education can help in overall student success.

Below are the 5 skills each student should strive to master:

1) Time Management:

Time is limited, with 24 hours in one day. In today’s world, students are busier than ever with extra-curricular activities, hobbies and time spent on the Internet. Thus, it's important for the student to set aside specific blocks of time where they can spend all their focus on their studies. This will allow them to accomplish more with less effort, while leaving time for other things. The student can try different techniques to see which one works best for them, such as setting 40-minute intervals, and 1 hour intervals. Once they feel comfortable with a set interval, they should continue with that specific time interval before taking breaks.

2) Set Expectations and Goals:

Setting expectations and goals will keep the student accountable. It will allow them to know what is to be achieved, which will allow them to create a success plan to follow. It will also allow them to evaluate the effectiveness of their study strategy. If they find that they are unsatisfied with the results, they should immediately change it with a strategy that seems more promising to them. In conclusion, setting expectations and goals ahead of time means the student is not waiting for a unfavourable report card to come in to make changes in their habits.

3) Develop Positive Study Habits:

Positive study habits are the core of any student’s study strategy. They can make or break the success of the student. These habits will not form over time and may require getting rid of negative habits. Let’s discuss some common negative study habits which include; cramming too much schoolwork into a small-time window, unhealthy diet, constant checking of mobile phone and social media, and keeping disorganized notes. These negative habits are common amongst the current generation of students, and they should rid them one at a time as some are not as easy to leave behind.

4) Weekly Note Reviews:

While note taking skills during class are critical, it’s even more important for the student to go over these notes later in the week. If the student finds their own notes to be unsatisfactory, they should refer to their textbook or ask a classmate. Weekly note reviews are crucial because the information gets stored in the student’s long-term memory. This means the student is studying to understand the subject, rather than merely remembering it the day before a test.

5) Figuring out the student’s learning style:

There are three main learning styles, auditory, visual and tactile. Auditory learners are those who learn by hearing and listening. Visual learners are those who learn by reading and looking at visuals. Lastly, tactile learners are those who learn by touching and doing. As mentioned earlier in the post, each student is unique and may have a combination of the three. It will benefit the student’s study strategy greatly if they know their learning style, as it can be seen as a strength that they should focus on. For instance, if someone is a tactile learner, then they should study by writing down or drawing the important concepts multiple times so they get a feel for it.

How can STEM Education aid in student success?

STEM education aims to provide career success to students that come from immensely varied and different backgrounds. For a lot of people, STEM is an equaling opportunity where socio-economic disparities are reduced to a great degree.

It is very difficult to explain the STEM pathway in detail in a limited scope, however, below are some of the core ingredients that constitute the STEM education system.

  1. STEM education aims at the acquisition of new skills, knowledge and facilities development of healthy habits of mind.
  2. This school success then leads to the opportunities that facilitate the student to put these skills into practice, leading to better career prospects.
  3. STEM education provides a sense of confidence, progress, and competence.
  4. It motivates students to be in, or have a sense of belonging to, a particular field of interest; and
  5. STEM gives information regarding different stages, requirements, and opportunities for the student

The above are the five key ingredients of STEM. They are present in every STEM school success course and they require attention at almost every stage of the education. As one keeps progressing along the way, there come further valuable lessons for them to learn.

In other words, STEM education is a very critical way to instill life-skills among so they can earn a life they deserve.
